Summit Day 1

So, I have been silent for awhile here. Been just a wee bit busy preparing for a little trip to Las Vegas for the 2012 Coach Summit. What is Summit? Summit is a time for Team Beachbody coaches, Beachbody trainers and corporate personnel to come together to learn from each other, work out, and celebrate the successes of the past year and get pumped up about what the coming year will bring. It started officially this past Thursday, but some of us got there early so that we could connect before all the activities, seminars and workouts took us every which way.

Taking a page from my friend Catherine of Small Town, Big Wardrobe, you are getting daily outfit photos. In my TurboFire tank, I headed out with eight other ladies to see what this Stripper 101 class is all about. I can see why pole dancing is growing as an area of fitness. My quads were sore for two days.

This is my pretty blue cami and blouse paired with brown capri's & sandals. Heading out to the first workshops on Thursday.

I didn't look nearly this pretty after just over an hour with Mr. Tony Horton and 2000 coaches. The workout we did was the same (similar?) to the one he does when he visits the troops. Can we say he whooped my heiney?

Summit Day 2 coming soon......

Post Summit Push

I don't know if I really shared here that I was getting ready to go to the Beachbody Coach Summit, which was held this past weekend in Los Angeles. I am extremely grateful to my mother, aunt, sisters and father who helped make this trip happen for me. I have come out of it with a greater vision of who I am, who I want to be, and where my life and business are going.my

I met up with my coach, Sarah, at LAX to take a Super Shuttle to the JW Marriott at LA Live Thursday afternoon. We got our badges and headed over to the Yard House for a meal. Whatever they put in those turkey sliders is the bomb! We separated for our evening activities. I headed to a tour of the Beachbody offices, and can I say WOW!

Friday started with a workout at 7 a.m.! I attended the workout with Body Gospel creator Donna Richardson Joyner who was absolutely amazing! The live drummers she brought along were just as amazing! This wasn't the only workout of the weekend. I had the opportunity to workout with Chalene Johnson as well on Friday (creator of Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire). Then there was the Super Workout with all of the trainers on the streets of L.A. Okay, only one street between the Nokia Plaza and the Staples Center! Over 2000 coaches working out in close quarters. It was AWESOME!!! And to top the weekend off I boogied at the after party Saturday night, and got in a nice swim Sunday morning before the first session and returning home.

Post Turbo Fire workout with a poster of Chalene! :)

Tony Horton (P90x) and I post Super Workout (I had cleaned up!)

In addition to these awesome workouts, there were amazing sessions. Besides the general sessions (three of these), I got the most out of the ones on time management and using social media to build a business. Did I mention they fed us as well? Shakeology every morning! Including the new flavor that was announced on Friday, Tropical. Look for it to be available towards the end of 2011/early 2012. The food at the dinner reception may have been a buffet, but it was amazing as well. The veggie pot stickers? I had a few! :)

I think thought that what I discovered in those three jam packed days was that this company and these coaches are all about building each other up and seeing the world a better, healthier place. I met and talked to so many people on the elevator, waiting in line, sitting on the bus, at the restaurant waiting for takeout, and a dozen other places. I made new friends and caught the sense of family that Beachbody is all about. Awesome!

Conference Attendance February 2008

Let me start with I regret any and all librarian-ese written here. I am using this venue as a way of gathering my thoughts for a mini-report. I have endeavored to shed light for non-library and non-cataloger folk.

Thursday, February 21, 2008

11:00-12:30: Bibliographic Control Committee (BCC-business meeting)

12:30-2:00: Music Vocabularies and Subject Access (Subject Access Subcommittee)
  • The Library of Congress is moving forward on the form-genre project with music headings being a pilot subject area.
  • The development of an Ethnographic Thesaurus through a Mellon Foundation Grant. The beta version is available at http://www.etproject.org
  • Presentation concerned primarily with social networking and social tagging
2:30-3:30: Teaching Music Bibliography
  • Scholarly editions backbone of the collection
  • RISM (International Inventory of Musical Sources)
  • Garland Encyclopedia of World Music
3:30-4:30: Technical Services Round table
  • Encoding level 3 records: Encouraged to enrich these records.
7:00-8:00: New England Chapter meeting
  • Not much of a meeting, but a heck of a good time

  • Unfortunately, I had to leave early for the drive home. At least I got to hear a bit, including the winning lyrics (here) of the Sea Shanty contest.

9:00-10:00: BCC News Hour: Breaking news and reports in music cataloging
  • Authorities: Can now use the musical sharp symbol rather than the pound sign in records
  • Authorities & Descriptive are reviewing and commenting on RDA (Resource Description and Access-the new cataloging code)
  • MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloging): Currently a proposal to make the 44o field obsolete (this is a series tracing field)
  • Subject: Discussion of form-genre headings with a potential discussion group being set up ; Under discussion is a SACO-music funnel (Subject Authority Control Program)
  • Playaways report: Looking at a best practices document, which is still up for comments. Biggest challenge is determining if it is a recording or an electronic resource.
  • Library of Congress Popular Sound Recordings in OCLC (Online Computer Library Center): Put in as encoding level 3 as keeping up with verification of headings was to difficult. Again any library can enrich these records and add headings.
  • Early Printed Music Report should be published in 2009
10:15-11:45: RDA: Update, discussion, and implementation

  • Online prototype should be available in spring 2008: will be the primary way to access the rules
  • Impact on MARC21
  • Publishers of RDA are in contact with ILS (Integrated Library System) vendors
    • Does this include Open Source ILS vendors?
  • Thematic index information will not be considered abbreviations. Opus number is still up for debate. Units of measurement will be abbreviated, but a lot of the current abbreviations are not coming over.
  • Slides from this presentation are here.
12:00-2:00: Lunch and networking
2:00-4:00: Bibliographic Control Committee (BCC-business meeting)
  • Further discussion of the form-genre project with Library of Congress among other things.
4:00-6:00: MLA business meeting
7:00-8:00: Cocktail hour with the MLA big band & live auction
8:00-11:00: Banquet

That is it. Doesn't seem like much does it? I will guarantee that my brain was extremely tired at the end of Saturday. Since the conference I have found out that I have been appointed to the Subject Access Subcommittee of the Bibliographic Control Committee. I am very excited about this opportunity to serve my primary professional organization. (Note: I was recently elected Secretary-Treasurer of the New England Chapter of MLA, which means I am serving both nationally and regionally).

My Conference Program!

I am starting this post as a way to get started on my collected thoughts to submit to the library to prove that spending money on me was worth it. I just returned from a 5 day/4 night trip to Pittsburgh, PA for the joint conference of the Music Library Association & the Society for American Music.

Thursday, March 1

11:00-12:30 School of Music recordings in music libraries: management, preservation, access
1:00-2:00 SAM Plenary Session in Honor of Thomas Hampson (a most eloquent man)
4:00-5:30 How to Sing (talks on aspects of The Sacred Harp & Shape-note singing schools in America)
5:30-7:00 Sacred harp sing-in
7:30-8:30 Concert at the University of Pittsburgh
8:30-11:00 Reception at the University of Pittsburgh (loved me a glass of wine & some good food)

Friday, March 2

9:00-10:30 Hot topics in cataloging (sounds more glamorous than it was!)
11:00-12:30 Voyager users-group meeting (blah!)
1:00-2:00 "Musical cross-dressing as class rebellion: Gretchen Wilson and the country rhetoric of the 'virile female'" (very fascinating topic that has very little to do with my actual job)
4:00-5:30 Naxos Music Library open forum
5:30-6:30 New England Chapter meeting

Saturday, March 3

7:30-9:00 Alexander Street Press breakfast
9:00-10:00 Dance (talks on Henry Ford's Dance Manual & on Fred Astaire's solo dances with African American musicians)
10:00-10:30 The present and future of integrated library systems (ILS)-This was actually a 90 minute session, but I opted for fun for the first hour!
12:30-2:00 Resource Description and Access (RDA): a new cataloging standard for a digital future
2:00-3:30 Foster, studied & sung (Stephen Foster that is, and it was a lot of fun!)
4:00-5:30 MLA business meeting
6:30-8:30 Cocktail reception (featuring the SAM Brass Band and the MLA Big Band)-I went down at 7 for the music.
8:30-11:00 Banquet & Dancing (my meal consisted of a sun dried tomato crusted chicken breast stuffed with bell pepper, spinach & cheese with a side of carrots & green beans, and a very fantastic chocolate torte for dessert. did I mention the wine?!)

I drove to the conference & back which was about a 10 hour drive each way. It was nice to be able to commune with myself, and rest my weary, introverted soul.
